We normally see it in the word 'immaculate': macula - Latin for spot or stain. But we don't often think of the obverse: 'maculate', spotted or stained, or more rarely, sexually defiled.
He reads that maculate can also be a verb, to speckle. He thinks of the spots that appear on his walls, and in front of his eyes.
He reads quickly, thinking of his children and his grandchildren, thinking that time is short. He is reminded as he reads of the words 'conception' and 'degeneration'.
