Mr Ham's cell was close to Mr Corn's, so although both of them had taken a vow of silence to complement their hunger strikes, it was easy enough for each to keep abreast of how the other was doing.
Mr Ham heard the rats cavorting in the night, he heard them eating Mr Corn's unwanted food, and his own.
Mr Ham heard Mr Corn die. It was a soft sound, like a rat leaving through a window.
When Mr Corn died, Mr Ham broke his vow of silence.
'Well,' said Mr Ham to the guard, 'There goes another one.' And he shook his head sadly, and ordered a plate of food.
